What can you expect?

Clothing

There is no dress code. Most visitors wear smart casual clothing, but you are welcome in anything you feel comfortable in. At premieres and gala occasions visitors sometimes dress more festively, but it is entirely optional.

Applause

Applaud at the end of the whole piece, not between movements. Not sure when the piece is over? Wait until the conductor turns to the audience - that is the moment.

Intermission

Most concerts have a 15-20 minute intermission. Ideal for getting a drink at the bar or stretching your legs. A typical concert lasts about two hours in total.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a classical concert last?
Most concerts last between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, including a 15-20 minute intermission. Chamber music concerts are often shorter, around 60-90 minutes without an intermission.
What do tickets cost?
Prices vary widely: from €10-15 student tickets to €100+ for the best seats at major orchestras. Many venues offer last-minute discounts and special youth rates.
Can I take children to a concert?
Many concert venues organize special family concerts that are shorter and more accessible. Regular evening concerts are usually suitable from around 6-8 years old, but check the venue website for age advice.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive 15-30 minutes before the start. That gives you time to hang up your coat, find your seat and read the programme booklet. After the concert has started, you can usually only enter after the first piece.
