Zijn familienaam wordt ook wel als Shostakovich of Schostakowitsch getranslitereerd, volgens respectievelijk de Engelse en Duitse spellingsregels. In de uitspraak ligt de klemtoon op de derde lettergreep (waardoor de voorgaande "o" uitgesproken wordt als doffe "a"), dus "Sjastakóvitsj".”
