Beethoven's string trios seem to be preparations for his string quartets, and after his first string quartet, he no longer composed trios. However, the three String Trios, Op. 9, are much more than mere exercises. When the 28-year-old Beethoven published them, he was quite proud. It's a shame that we so often associate Beethoven with the string quartet that these trios often remain overlooked. This music fits perfectly alongside the string quartets, as 'string quartet -1'. Dmitri Makhtin, Miguel da Silva, and Kyril Zlotnikov prove that this music by Beethoven is truly masterful.
