Composed in 2012, the extraordinary Absolute Jest by John Adams, for string quartet and orchestra, draws on half a dozen fragments by Ludwig van Beethoven—notably from his late string quartets—and propels them into an incandescent rhythmic flow, combining exuberant virtuosity, wit, and raw energy. Written between 1803 and 1804, the Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” emerges at the dawn of Romanticism as a groundbreaking work.
