Hij geldt als een van de belangrijkste pianisten van de 20e eeuw en was als componist voortzetter van de Russische romantiek. Tot zijn bekende werken behoren het tweede en derde pianoconcert, de prelude in cis mineur uit Morceaux de Fantaisie, zijn tweede symfonie en Rapsodie op een thema van Paganini.”
