Written between 1947 and 1948 under the weight of the Stalinist regime, Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 unfolds an extreme tension and striking darkness. Behind formidable virtuosity, carried by the OPRL concertmaster George Tudorache, the violin becomes an inner voice: biting irony and fierce lyricism follow one another up to an implacably intense final passacaglia.
