Artistic director Candida Thompson and Finnish pianist and composer Olli Mustonen share a long musical friendship. This makes his return to Amsterdam Sinfonietta after ten years all the more special. Mustonen’s exceptional musicality cannot be praised enough. His unique compositional style is evident in his Piano Quintet: a virtuoso piece that begins passionately and works its way from a mysterious and hypnotic middle section to a joyful and euphoric conclusion. Elgar’s expressive Piano Quintet, written over a hundred years ago, displays an unapologetic late Romantic style. It is a grand work that evokes an almost orchestral world of sound. Together with Olli Mustonen at the keyboard, the four string players of Amsterdam Sinfonietta bring this tour de force to life.
