Schubert’s String Quintet in C is considered one of the greatest masterpieces in chamber music. One of his most profound and emotionally rich compositions, Schubert completed it just before his death in 1828 at the age of 31. The addition of a second cello (instead of the usual second viola) gives the work a warm, deep sound. Almost the same age as Schubert, Johannes Brahms completed his first string sextet, showcasing the young Brahms’ fully developed mastery.
